Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the fiscal incentives policy for the automotive sector, implemented at the end of 2008, on medical/hospital costs due to motorcycle accidents in Brazil. Since it was impossible to observe these costs arising from these accidents after 2008, in the absence of the policy, the research used the Synthetic Control method, using as counterfactual the medical/hospital costs caused by other types of vehicles. The analysis was conducted for the period 2003 to 2014. The results point to an increase of 54.74% in medical/hospital costs for motorcycle accidents, when compared to its Synthetic Control, which means an increase of R$ 68,216,880.00 in these costs from accidents involving motorcycles.
