Cooperativism is the association between people, with mutual ends, to improve the economic, social and cultural situation of the group, reducing production costs. In this way, it can reduce costs of production, distribution and consumption. The article analyzed the evolution and political, economic and social importance of the cooperative sector in the municipality of Canoinhas, located in the Planalto Norte of Santa Catarina. The study included cooperatives with active registration in Canoinhas in 2016, updated data in 2019, and then classified by activity sector groups. Aspects related to the number of members cooperated, year of foundation, number of employees linked and the contribution to local-regional development were evaluated. Results were constructed based on literature and on-site visits to cooperatives. It was found that there are a total of fourteen cooperatives in the municipality and that these are mainly from the agricultural segment. It is noticed that capitalism stimulates individuality and competitiveness among people. It is understood that even within the capitalist logic it is possible to set up cooperatives that minimize socioeconomic impacts; promote participation, social inclusion and regional development.
